Finding Value in Distress Late in the Cycle


Michael Gatto (‘93)

Partner, Silver Point Capital

Mr. Gatto was one of the first employees of Silver Point Capital, a credit focused hedge fund. He helped grow the business from $120MM of assets under management in 2002 to approximately $10 billion currently. 

After joining the Firm in April 2002, he became the Firm’s first non-founding partner in January 2003. Mr. Gatto helped build out and runs several businesses for Silver Point. Today, he is the head of the Firm’s Restructuring group, where he oversees a team responsible for driving and negotiating in and out-of-court corporate restructurings, the head of the Firm’s Real Estate business, and the head of Silver Point’s principal lending business which focuses on lending to middle market companies. Prior to joining Silver Point, Mr. Gatto worked at Goldman Sachs as a senior member within the Special Situations Investing Business, specializing in investing in debt of distressed companies. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Mr. Gatto designed and taught credit training programs for loan officers of North American and European Financial Institutions. Prior to this, he was a loan officer and director of Global New Entry Training at Citibank. Mr. Gatto received an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in Economics. He is also a CFA Charterholder and has served on several Boards, which have included specialty retailer Party City, and most currently a board member of New Cotai Holdings, a Macau gaming company and Chairman of the Board of Quinn Industries an Irish Industrial company.

Outside of Silver Point, Mr. Gatto is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School and Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, where he teaches courses on credit analysis, distressed value and special situation investing.

Steve Winograd (‘82)

Managing Director, PennantPark

Steve Winograd joined PennantPark in September 2015 and is a Managing Director. He is responsible for originating, underwriting, structuring, negotiating, executing, managing, and monitoring investments for the Firm and on behalf of clients based on the East Coast.

Before joining PennantPark, Steve spent 35 years as an Investment Banker originating and executing leveraged finance, M&A, public and private equity, and restructuring transactions for private equity firms and their portfolio companies.  During this period he held senior positions in, and in some cases ran, the Financial Sponsors Groups of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns, BMO Capital Markets, Deutsche Bank, and Drexel Burnham Lambert.  Steve also currently serves as an Independent Director of Shopko Stores. He previously served as an Independent Director of Caesars Entertainment Operating Company, The Gymboree Corporation, and Linn Acquisition Company, LLC.

Steve holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MBA (Beta Gamma Sigma) from Columbia University School of Business.


Joseph Citarrella

Managing Principal, Monarch Alternative Capital

Mr. Citarrella is a Senior Investment Professional for Monarch. Prior to joining Monarch in 2012, Mr. Citarrella was an Associate at Goldman Sachs in the Global Investment Research equity group covering integrated oil, the exploration and production sector, and refineries. Mr. Citarrella serves on the board of Resolute Energy Corporation.


Joe Goldschmid (‘14)

Director, Angelo Gordon

Joseph Goldschmid is a Director in the Distressed Debt Group at Angelo Gordon, a privately-held alternative investment firm, managing approximately $32 billion across a broad range of credit and real estate strategies.  Joe joined Angelo Gordon in 2016 and has served on numerous ad hoc creditor committees, including several steering committees.  Joe currently serves on the Board of Directors for Expro Group Holdings International Limited.

Before joining Angelo Gordon, Joe worked in the Restructuring and Special Situations Group at The Blackstone Group and PJT Partners. Previously, he worked as an Analyst at Morgan Stanley. Joe holds a B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School, and a J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a James Kent Scholar.

Gautam Ganguli

Special Advisor, Atlas Merchant Capital

Gautam Ganguli is special advisor to the CEO for emerging markets at Atlas Merchant Capital, a global financial services investment firm, and a partner in the Brescon Atlas India Special Situations Fund.  

Before joining Atlas Merchant Capital, Gautam was part of the founding team of Atlas Mara Limited, a sub-Saharan African banking group listed on the London Stock Exchange, since 2013.  Prior to Atlas Mara, Gautam was a growth investor in emerging markets including in West Africa and the Middle East and a private equity investor with Wind Point Partners and PNC Mezzanine Capital, where his portfolio included multiple successful distressed turnarounds.

Gautam holds a BSBA from Washington University in St. Louis and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.


Moderator: Anthony Horvat

Managing Director, Accordion Partners

Anthony Horvat is a Managing Director with over two decades of experience leading business improvement initiatives across numerous industries and situations. He brings a deep and extensive skill set to all aspects of business improvement, including acquisition integration to generate value on behalf of all stakeholders.

Anthony was an early member of the highly successful Turnaround & Restructuring Service practice at AlixPartners where he focused on increasing value for under-performing and distressed companies globally. His extensive client work included leadership positions at RCN, Acterna, WorldCom and Dura Automotive. His experience in turnarounds and performance improvement cross a wide range of client companies located in the US and overseas with revenues ranging from $100 MM to $40 billion.

Anthony received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He received the M&A Advisor 2015 Outstanding Distressed M&A Transaction Award, is a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor and published in the ABI Journal.
